The problem with mobile games: Yugioh Duel Links Review

When Duel Links came out, the hype over Pokemon Go had largely died down.  This meant that we were primed and ready to have another nostalgia bait game around.  With 40 million downloads worldwide, this seemed like a great idea.  It had all the classic cards before the game suffered scope creep with synchro summons and crazy other fusions.  The 5 monster slots and spell slots were shrunk down to 3, which made the game more accessible as a mobile game.  However, Duel Links falls into the classic problem with all mobile games.

The problem with episodic shows: Glee case study

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't like watching episodic shows.  There has to be some overarching plot that is involved, which episodes go towards.  Having one off episodes that are trying to compel you one way or another, and the characters are for the most part flat.

That being said, I still have a soft spot for the show Glee.  I like the singing and the dance routines, because it depicts a world that is more entertaining than our own.  However, it was a chore to continue watching past the first season.

Rent or Own Your Home

When you first leave your parent's home, one thing on your mind is whether you should rent your first home or whether you should get a mortgage.   Ultimately, there are pros and cons for both sides, and while mortgaging a house seems daunting especially with student loans over your head, it may make sense for you.

Observables in Angular

Observables are the bread and butter Angular (2+).  Thus, it is good to take some time to learn how to use them.  Trust me.  They look a little more complicated than promises and callbacks, but it will speed up development if you add these to your toolkit.

ng-conf 2017: Brief Overview

Last week, I had the pleasure of going to ng-conf, so here is a "short" overview of what to expect going to these conferences and the highlights of what happened in this one.  There will probably be more post on specific talks.

Anime Review: Rubric

Here is a brief rubric for all of my anime reviews.  I'll preface all posts like Anime Review: [Anime name].

Anime Review: Why I hate Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop is a classic, or so I have been told.  I really have no clue why people like it, and it seems like one of those artsy animes that all the hipsters just love.

It's aged relatively well, but from my perspective, it was a boring.

Smart vs. Knowledgeable

A while ago, I made posted a quote from my teacher that stated his response to being called smart.  It stated that to sound smart is to be able to talk about something people don’t know about.  However, this just goes to show you that being smart and knowledgeable are almost synonymous in today’s culture.

Investing shouldn't be scary

How to buy anything

There is a stigma with buying stocks.  People are always worried that they are not getting the best price.  However, you never see the same stigma when buying groceries for the week.  The same principles apply for both though.  $20 dollars of groceries may give you $15 dollars of satisfaction, or it may give you $40 dollars of satisfaction.

Why Anime Sucks Nowadays?

Every season there are a ton of new anime series that come out, but I often find myself not wanting watch any of them.  Now and then, I go watch a few episodes of some of the more popular series, and I end up dropping most of them.  It almost seems like we are far away from the golden age of anime.

Here is another incoherent rant on why I think this is the case.

Why Statistics Lie

Let me clarify, statistics don't lie.  They are inherently misleading.  The reason... context.

Anime Review:Why Sword Art Online is Good

A while back I posted on a seasonal anime blog called Infinity and One (I was RightToLeft), where we discuss our thoughts on the anime in the coming seasons.  One thing that was always irked me is how people treat Sword Art Online (SAO) like it was the worst thing since Mars of Destruction.  However, I always gave it the benefit of the doubt.  So as a throwback to the good old days, I wanted to write about why I think SAO was actually good.

The Problem with T.V.

What's the sitch?

Let's say you are watching the next best thing since Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, or House of Cards.  You look forward to watching new episodes every week, and then suddenly one of two things happen: it gets the axe and we end up with a Firefly situation, or it goes on aimlessly trying to find itself.

This happens in almost every medium: movies, comics, books, manga, and T.V.  However, there has to be some reason that this isn't a solved problem.  We all get invested in these shows, but never really get the closure we want.

Tips for the beginning investor

A while ago, I started to get into the stock market game, and I am going to outline some tips that got me a substantial return on a small investment.  Don't take this as a game plan for how to guarantee a large return on your investment, but just my own personal thoughts on how I approach trading.

Should you use Angular 2?

A lot of people ask me two questions when I tell them I use Angular 2:
Should I learn it?
Should we adopt it?
Number 1 is more for the lone employee trying to expand his/her horizons. Number 2 is for the manager looking to start or upgrade an existing project.

Welcome to my blog!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for coming.  I am not sure what this blog really is or what it will become in the future, so please provide any feedback in a comment down below for what you would like me to talk about.

I am a programmer that works mainly on Angular 2 front-end, NodeJS/Sails backend with ties to SQL databases, and all neatly tied up into a some AWS infrastructure.  I am also familiar with Angular 1, Java Spring, Weblogic, CakePHP, Django, Python, C++, etc.  If you are interested in anything that I listed, and just want me to explain something, I am all for it.

The main purpose of this blog is for me to jot down what I am thinking at the time in digestible bites.  Hopefully, this makes me a bit smarter going forward, and solidify what I already know.  Ultimately, I expect this to unravel into some sort of brain dump that doesn't make any sense.

Cheers, Peter
